Child Development

SDS plays a key role in child protection and wellbeing in the framework of rights provided under Child Rights Convention. It responds to child wellbeing and protection concerns through organising children's groups, making delivery of community services more accessible and effective, and reporting on issues of concern. This means SDS inform children and young people of their rights to be protected from abuse or neglect and of the avenues for support available to them, and provides care to children and young people.

SDS is also involved in undertaking theme specific research and reporting on the utility and effectiveness of child welfare services. Recently SDS worked with the CRY for a Malnutrition Study in National Capital Territory of Delhi in which some significant findings has been made, which are as follows:

  • Five among the eight identified children were found to belong to families who have migrated from states like Bihar and Haryana.
  • Prevalence of malnourishment more in BPL families.
  • Maximum numbers of families are dependent upon Anganwadi for the SNP (Supplementary Nutrition Program).

By adopting prevention as the best policy, intervention in the arena needs to be started 'now' as everything else can wait but not the child. Families and State need to put a combined and persistent effort to fight the battle against malnutrition and provide a protective cover to their precious children.
